February Storytimes

Hearts, love, red, and penguins usher in our February Children’s Storytime.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day stories will have your child’s creativity flowing with hearts and the colors red. R-E-D red, we can all spell red, but can we find books where the covers and spines are red or have the word “red” in the title of the book?

What better way to wind up our February Storytime than with those cute little fellows in tuxedo-looking feathers! That’s right: penguins! Look for further details on our upcoming Penguin Pals show on February 25th at the Aurora Public Library. We don’t mean the stuffed ones either! Real live penguins will be stopping by the library, so come to our penguin storytime to get ready to meet these feathered friends!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!

January Storytimes

Welcome, 2023!
Our storytime for children in January will start off with fun activities using the numbers in 2023. What do the words hibernation, arctic, and nocturnal all have in common? Why, animals of course! We cannot forget about snow, ice, and the color white to fit into our January storytimes also. There is going to be SNOW much fun! We hope you don’t miss out on this! There may be a surprise author study also on 2 special dates!
We hope to see all the kiddos at our storytime! Happy New Year!
January storytime has all kinds of cold-themed activities. We will start off the first week of January by celebrating our new year and incorporating the numbers 2, 0, 2, and 3 into our storytime. Books with numbers in their titles will be featured this week as well as New Year books… maybe books that just came out! Kids will enjoy making party poppers as well as participating in challenges involving building with 2 or 3 items. Imaginations will soar in this first-week challenge.
Happy New Year to everyone and we look forward to seeing you at our storytimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Dillsboro Public Library and Wednesdays and Fridays at the Aurora Public Library at 10:30 am!

Special Holiday Storytime!

Sugar cookies, frosting, sprinkles, PJs, robes, and slippers, oh my! Children will not want to miss our special storytimes on Saturday, December 17th at 1:00 p.m. located at our Dillsboro Library Branch, and Tuesday, December 20th at 6:00 p.m. at our Aurora Library Branch. “Cookies for Santa” is our agenda for both of these dates. Stories and activities will feature children decorating two cookies; one for themselves to enjoy and then one to keep and put out for Santa on his special night. Don’t worry, we have a special box to keep that special cookie for you know who!

We cannot wait to see you there! Please wear your coziest, warmest, snuggliest pajamas and get ready to read and eat!

Gingerbread Baby Comes to Dillsboro!

On Saturday, December 3rd, Gingerbread Baby assists with storytime at Dillsboro Public Library as part of the Dillsboro Hometown Christmas. The fun begins at 1:00 pm and all attendees will enjoy listening to Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett followed by decorating their own gingerbread babies, participating in gingerbread activities, and enjoying a photo with the Gingerbread Baby. Attendees can get an entry for the library’s Hometown Christmas raffle which includes a pass to Reindeer Ridge, a $50 Larosa’s gift card, and assorted Jan Brett-themed items. The winner will be selected in the evening at Dillsboro’s Hometown Christmas but must be present to win.

The Gingerbread Baby can’t wait to meet you!

November Storytimes!

Leaves, pumpkins, turkeys, scarecrows, pies, harvest, squirrels, orange, red, yellow, and brown are all things happening in our November Storytime. What did The Leaf Thief really steal? And If You Give a Moose a Muffin what does he do with it? Or why are there Too Many Pumpkins? But the true question is what did The Scarecrow do to help the crow? Activities galore surrounding this thankful month of Fall. We look forward to seeing you and your family there to learn all of the answers to the questions above. Maybe we will learn How to Catch a Turkey!

Aurora Public Library storytimes are Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 am.

Dillsboro Public Library storytimes are Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

We hope the entire family can join us to kick off the Holiday season on November 26th at 12:00 p.m. at APL to watch the movie “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” See you there!

September Storytimes!

Get ready for teddy bears (Winnie-the-Pooh and Corduroy are excited), dots (green, red, purple, blue, any color you choose), pirates (don’t worry, we won’t make you walk the plank) and apples (we are so glad Johnny planted all those trees) to start off our September Fall Storytime Programming. Rhymes, songs, dances, activities and crafts will have your little ones waiting for the next adventure here at the library.

Bloomers from our local daycare/preschools will have their special time on Mondays. Sprouts will be getting ready to grow in our program on Tuesdays (DPL) and Wednesdays (APL). Seedlings will start to sprout and then bloom into wonderful listeners and avid goers to the library on Thursdays (DPL) and Fridays (APL).

All times for our programming start at 10:30 a.m. We look forward to seeing all of you here. Just a reminder that our session plans are geared towards each groups age; Bloomers (preschool/kindergarten visits only), Sprouts (3-6) and those Seedlings (ages 0-2 years old). See you soon!

Oh yeah, teddy bears, pirates and apples are welcome to join you!

Fall Children’s Programming

Our Summer Reading Program was quite the success. What a wonderful time we had this summer learning about different modes of transportation. Thank you to everyone who took the time to let your child attend these storytimes.

We are now getting ready for our Fall children’s programming which will be starting Tuesday, September 6, 2022. To say we are excited about the Fall Programming is an understatement. Listed below are brief descriptions of each program being offered.

Bloomer Time is a program for visiting preschools in the area. This program will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis from each preschool. We have tentatively set the time for these preschools to visit at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays at the Aurora Public Library. If there is a Dillsboro area preschool that would like to visit our Dillsboro Branch, we will set a time that would work for them also on Mondays. These programs last around 45 minutes. Again, all preschool directors will be contacting either Leslie Sutherlin, Director, or Tammy Wohlfrom, Children’s Library, directly for these dates.

Sprout Time will be designed for children ages 3-6 to come in with an adult. Our program will consist of stories, songs, rhymes, crafts and/or learning activities. This age will blossom in no time to fantastic book lovers as we introduce age-leveled books geared to them. All caregivers will need to be present in the children’s area or right outside of our area. Our scheduled days are as follows for Sprout Time: Tuesdays at Dillsboro Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at Aurora Public Library at 10:30 a.m. This program will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

Seedling Time will be a program for our infants/toddlers from the ages of 0-2 years old. We are excited to offer this program and watch how these age groups react to our library time for them. Simple songs, nursery rhymes, fingerplay (easy motions/movement), sensory activity and of course a story is being offered to this age group. Of course, all caregivers are involved in this program which lasts around 20 minutes. The following days will be for our Seedling Time program: Thursdays at Dillsboro Public Library at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at Aurora Public Library at 10:30 a.m.

And lastly, we are offering 4th grade on up ages (9+) to join us for our Chapter Chat Book Club which will be on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Dillsboro Public Library. The date for the Aurora Public Library location will be the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. We will be introducing our first Chapter Chat participants to Harry Potter. Discussion of the book, games, activities and snacks will round out our Chapter Chat meetings. Who knows, the next book we introduce may be decided by our participants in the club!

As you can see from all of the programming being prepared, we will be taking off the month of AUGUST to prepare for these events. Look out for our newsletter/calendar that will be listing dates of all of our programming events. We look forward to getting all the kids EXCITED ABOUT THE LIBRARY!

**Please note we realize there are siblings that may need to be in attendance as long as everyone understands that all program activities are geared towards the ages listed above.
