Awesome Audiobooks

You probably already know that you can download digital titles right to your smartphone or tablet with OverDrive, but did you know about the extensive audiobook collection available for download on the Indiana Digital Download Center? One of my favorite things to do is to download audiobooks right to my phone so I can listen to them while I’m driving or working around the house; it’s so convenient to have books right on my phone, which I already take with me everywhere anyway.

If you’re new to OverDrive and aren’t sure where to start, please stop by one of the branches in the Aurora Public Library District or give one of them a call so we can walk you through the process. The first thing you’ll need to set up with your account is a pin number, which you might already have. This number is what you type in when you renew your books online. If you aren’t sure if you have a pin — or if you’ve forgotten it — a staff member can set up a new one for you in seconds.

Whatever you’re in the mood for, OverDrive has it. You can search by title, author, genre, new releases, and titles available now. I really enjoy listening to memoirs because they are usually read by the author.

If you’d rather listen to audiobooks on CD, we also have a large collection of those for you to check out as well. At the Aurora branch, the audiobooks on CD have recently moved upstairs into what was formerly the Paperback Room when paperback fiction books were integrated into the regular fiction collection. You can browse the selection by stopping by either the Aurora or Dillsboro branches, or by searching our catalog online. If there’s an audiobook we don’t have that you’d like to listen to, you can always put a request in through Interlibrary Loan.

If you aren’t sure what audiobook to try first, I recommend listening to a book you’ve already read. That way, you know what happens already so if you find yourself zoning out, you won’t be missing anything. Many library patrons read the book and listen to the audiobook simultaneously, which can be helpful for you to be able to flip back and forth if you do miss or forget something. You can be immersed in the story wherever you go when you just can’t put the book down.

It seems like people either really love listening to audiobooks or they really hate it. I think that anyone can love an audiobook if they have an awesome narrator. Even if you don’t think you’ll like listening to someone read to you, or you’ve tried audiobooks before and can’t seem to get into them, I encourage you to try just one more time. Ask any of the staff at the Aurora Public Library District for recommendations! We’d be happy to help!

Happy Listening!

Valérian and Laureline: Digital Comic Books

A popular French comic book series is now available from the Indiana Digital Download Center: Valérian and Laureline.

Valérian and Laureline are space/time traveling agents who work for Galaxity, the Capital of Earth and the center of the Terran Galactic Empire in the 28th century. Valérian is everything you would expect from a typical hero: he’s handsome, strong-jawed, and is always in action. Laureline is the independent, intelligent, and sensual partner from 11th century France who accidentally discovers Valérian time traveling. Together throughout the series, they encounter beings from all different planets and time periods, face challenges, and explore.

The first installment of the series was published in France in 1967 by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières. Valérian and Laureline was groundbreaking because, unlike Western comics at the time, the series was more about celebrating diversity and portraying social issues as a universal truth, rather than vanquishing bad guys and fighting crime.

The series has also been greatly influential on several sci-fi movies, like Independence Day and the Star Wars franchise. A new movie, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, was just released on July 21, 2017. The movie was written by Christin and Mézières and is directly based on the comic book series. You can check out a novelization of the movie here.

The Indiana Digital Download Center has acquired thirteen of the twenty-one volumes in the series, starting with The City of Shifting Waters. You can check out or place a hold on the series today with your library card and pin numbers.

Are you going on a trip and don’t want to lug a bunch of travel books around with you? You don’t want to constantly be worrying about losing the books, or how they’re going to fit in your suitcase, or how much your suitcase is going to weigh at the airport. We have plenty of travel guides that can be checked out from the Aurora Public Library District if you prefer to have the hard copy of a book in front of you, but we also have several little-known online travel resources that are available.

Of course, you know that you can download digital formats of books and audio books from the Indiana Digital Download Center, but what you might not have known is that we have an abundance of travel books and guides available to download as well. Since this selection of downloads are little-known, it is likely that you will be able to borrow and download a title right away. If you have any questions about this, please don’t hesitate to call the library or stop in with your device today!

If you go under the Online Resources tab through the Aurora Public Library District website and scroll down, you’ll see a whole list of databases that you, as a library patron, can use at no cost. A to Z in the USA

This website is amazing because you can select information by state or the country as a whole, rather than slogging through a bunch of information you don’t really need to know. You just have to log in with your library card number and you’ll be ready to go! You can explore the different climates throughout the various regions of the Unites States, as well as culture and society, education, food, history, geography, and so much more. If you narrow your search down by state, there are more tabs to go through that are more specific than the general overview of the state that is provided, including information about demographics, energy, maps, and more.

A to Z World Travel

This site is similar to the former website, however, this page is expanded to include the entire world. You can select where you’re traveling to by popular cities listed in alphabetical order with the country in parentheses. There is also a section included on the homepage with links to information you might need quickly, such as the different time zones of the world, satellite telephones and international calling, and tips on how to save money. Once you have selected the city you will be traveling to, you will be directed to a page with in-depth information devoted strictly to that city with a real-time clock telling you what time it is there at the top of the screen. There are tabs listed that will offer neighborhood information, maps, activities, emergency information, and more.

road-globe

Global Road Warrior

This website allows you to search by country where you are traveling. Once again, there are tabs running along the left-hand side of the page after you have selected your country that you can select for more in-depth information pertaining to these specific tabs, such as business culture, facts about the country, language glossaries, human rights information, health and medical information, religion, and travel essentials. There is also a section where you can see news feeds in real time so you will be as up-to-date as possible on information.

These three resources working together will provide you with an arsenal of information so you will be as prepared as possible for your next trip. And the best part is, you can access this information from anywhere with an Internet connection as long as you have your library card number with you!

Happy Traveling! Also, I’d really like to come with you.
