Not Accepting Interlibrary Loan Requests

Temporarily Suspended Interlibrary Loan Requests

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond the Aurora Public Library District’s control, we are no longer able to accept Interlibrary Loan requests for the time being.

The Indiana State Library’s courier service, which manages all Interlibrary Loan pick-ups and deliveries across the state, have been experiencing significant delays and backlogs since the ISL decided to switch courier services at the end of this summer. The ISL made the decision to switch back to the original courier service in September after the new courier service failed to meet expectations and demand. During these transitions, the ISL suspended the online service that libraries use for lending materials in between districts several times, and has done so again starting today. For these reasons, the current ISL courier service has not made regular stops at many libraries across the state, including the Aurora Public Library District, since August of this year. For more information about this decision, you may contact the Indiana State Library through email at communications@library.in.gov.

In light of this current situation, the Aurora Public Library District has also made the decision to temporarily suspend Interlibrary Loan requests until the library district has received at least one week of normal deliveries. We have chosen to make this difficult decision due to our inability to ensure a swift and hassle-free Interlibrary Loan process for you, our patrons. Unfortunately, we do not have an estimate for when this service may resume, as it depends entirely on the actions of the ISL and their current courier. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We understand how important this service is to so many of our patrons, and we assure you, we are doing everything we can to guarantee the best library services within our means.

During this time, we would like to remind you that if we are unable to find a resource for you, there are other options for locating this resource. We offer FREE access to online eBooks, eAudiobooks, and eMagazines through our digital reading app, Libby. You can download this app on your mobile device and read from anywhere. All you need is your library card and the four-digit pin you set when getting your card. If you do not have a pin set up yet, we are happy to get one set up for you! All you need to do is call us 812-926-0646 or visit any of our branches and speak to a librarian. We also offer a FREE online streaming platform called Kanopy, where you can watch thousands of excellent films on any Smart television or mobile device. Kanopy also features Kanopy Kids, where you can watch popular children’s books read-alongs and check out educational shows perfect for all your little ones. You also need your library card and a pin to access this resource.

We also have reciprocal borrowing privileges with many other library districts in the region. If you are unable to find what you are looking for at APLD, you can get a library card FOR FREE at the Lawrenceburg Public Library District, the Osgood and Milan Public Libraries, the Ohio County Public Library, the Switzerland County Public Library, the Jefferson County Public Library, the Jennings County Public Library, and the Rushville Public Library, as well as many others in the state. You must have your APLD library card to sign up for another library’s membership. Always call the library ahead to make sure you have all the other required materials to sign up for their card. Have a specific library in mind where you would like to get a card? Check the full list of Reciprocal Libraries here.

If you have any further questions or concerns about the library decision, please call us at 812-926-0646 or email us at contact@eapld.org. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and want to help in any way we can. We will inform you as soon as we know service has resumed to normal.

Thank You!
