Rand al’Thor is a young, small-town farmer who lives with his father on the edge of town, Emond’s Field in the Two Rivers. He isn’t concerned with much beyond seeing his two best friends, Perrin Aybara and Matrim Cauthon, and the girl he is practically betrothed to, Egwene al’Vere. Not many strangers come to the Two Rivers, so when a mysterious woman and man appear in town before a festival along with a gleeman (an entertainer) and a peddler, all of Emond’s Field is abuzz with excitement. But then the town and surrounding area is attacked by fabled monsters of the Dark One, Trollocs. Rand, Perrin, Mat, Egwene, and Egwene’s mentor Nyaneve al’Meara are forced to flee with the strangers and gleeman in order to save their village. However, it soon becomes clear that there are more to the story of the ta’veren (the three young men who are special in some way) than meets the eye.
You’ll travel through a fantasy land where anything is possible and Jordan’s attention to detail is superb. The series is worth reading and rereading multiple times because you’ll always learn something new. There’s magic, good and evil, light and darkness, soldiers, wolves, shapeshifters, queens and princesses, and so much more. This is the perfect series if you want an escape from the mundane and to disappear into the lives of the characters that you will grow to love and hate. Told in the third-person, the chapters switch back and forth between numerous characters so you’re always wanting to know more.
I’ve been reading this series since high school (with breaks in between) because the volumes are massive and the stories are often intense. However, this is an amazing series that once you read it through once, you’ll start over and read it again. You can check out the books from the Aurora Public Library District as well as from the Indiana Digital Download Center.
